Song Information:
This is based on Der Doppelgnger, a song written in about 1827 by Franz Schubert with words from a poem by Heinrich Heine.
Schubert was, I think, the first heavy metal artist. While composers like Mozart and Haydn wrote bright, decorative music, Schubert knew he was dying of syphilis at the age of 30 and wrote some of the most creepy and tortured music imaginable, and I believe that it is still effective today.
If you are wondering what I'm saying in the vocals, it's Still ist die Nacht. -- the night is still. I had intended to read the entire poem by Heine, but I discovered that I don't read German very well, and after stumbling over words like Schmerzengewalt I decided to stick with a sample of only the first line. Those interested in the poem can find an English translation of it
here.
Sheet music for this piece is available at a nominal fee at my page at SibeliusMusic.
