Song Information:

This song is sort of indirect. I had a friend, Jim Todd, that passed away on Christmas Eve, and I just went to his wake a few days back. He was a Viet Vet, a Marine, who I worked with. He was a rigger (he climbed flagpoles, among other things) that was fearless and lived a good life and I learned a lot from working with him.

At the same time my mother is going through a hard time as she has Alzheimer's and is facing her life in decline ( and my younger brothers that still live near her are attempting to deal with it), so part of this song is about her too. I guess it's about how life gets to its end. Sorry for being so heavy on New Year's Eve, but it's my life right now.

The music started out with a Drums on Demand drum pattern in 6/8 called Odd Shuffle, and I paired it with an oddly tuned acoustic guitar part and then tried to fit a bunch of stuff around that. I was trying to record a electric guitar part, but nothing was working. I think the harmonica works, though. I wanted to get a song up for the New Year. And I'm so glad MacIdol is back up!

Song Lyrics:

Ive been down to market
Watched what I could of the buying game
Never lost myself
Easy to tell when my time came

held my place in line
held my tongue when Im told
nothing to declare or define
a value thats not bought and sold

look at the hands
counting the money multiplying
the fish and the loaves
never to count again
goin home

I looked up to the flag
Flying in the stiff wind
Made sure there wasnt a chance
It would fall again

Climbed that mast, Fearless
because there was nothing else to be
If I wanted something I took it.
It wasnt given to me.

Look at these hands
That held the halyard
That hoisted the standard
Never to hold on again
Goin home

Ive been down to the harbor
lookin for the lights that mark the way
been over the mountain
lookin for the break of day

Look at these footsteps weary
carried this body all the way up and down
All over this small existence
What is left there to be found
So Im goin home
