Song Information:

A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away, I lived in Buffalo, N.Y., for a time while I worked for The Associated Press. Buffalo is known as the "Queen City." The first part of this song was written during a particularly lonely night there, my first time truly on my own, away from college and all of my roommates. I eventually moved to Nebraska with the AP, and finished the song there. It also alludes to a trip I made to Chicago to help cover a football game there for the AP. This was probably the toughest song to record on this album. I could never get the sample right for the bass line during the verses, or the right guitar sound. I eventually found a good fretless bass tone and decided to go with layered 12-string guitar patterns over the verses instead of the rhythmic, staccato version I originally recorded. It makes the verses a bit more "minor" sounding, even though they aren't, but I like it, and the contrast it gives to the chorus.

Song Lyrics:

Queen City lonely
In the middle of the night
Trying not to be the only
Man without a light
I wrote the book on hockey
And the snow was coming down
I smashed myself at concrete
There was ice on the ground

There's a fear, when you follow
The lonely path that I have walked
Are you feeling fine?
Well, I'm not perfect
But I don't have to be

It's a gray and dusky morning
Flash forward one year
I've had a change of venue
But I still feel this fear
I have one too many girlfriends
And the snow is coming down
In my dreams in Cheektowaga
There was ice on the ground

There's a fear, when you follow
The lonely path that I have walked
Are you feeling fine?
Well, I'm not perfect
But I don't have to be

And then I dream I'm in Chicago
With the snow on Soldier Field
We were drunk up in the Hancock
But my mind was somewhere else
Have you ever been to Nebraska?
Now there's a place for snow
The wind blows and chills your bones
Until you miss your Queen City home

There's a fear, when you follow
The lonely path that I have walked
Are you feeling fine?
Well, I'm not perfect
But I don't have to be

I missed her in the morning
But I can hear the rain fall, in Buffalo
Standing sentry on the edge of the world
Back there, in Buffalo
Say goodbye to all of my friends
But I'll be back here, in Buffalo
