Song Information:

Everything in this song is somebody in our family vocalizing or being used as percussion, though in many cases processing was added to the sample.

The title uses the method described by Lewis Carroll to come up with words like "frumious".

I posted a remastered version on 12/5/04. It is a higher bit rate and greater volume than the original, but is otherwise unchanged.

Here's more detailed info for the MacIDOL Competition #2:

Fjamily - Taken from the Lewis Carroll method of trying to say two words at once and seeing what comes out, in this case "Family Jam".

The only instruments used were me and my family members' bodies as percussion and voices. (We are each used both ways.) I used a Logitech USB microphone directly into a USB port and into GarageBand to record all sounds. Almost every track was processed somehow, but all with plugins built into GarageBand or Jam Pack 1 (which was the only Jam Pack at the time.) In some cases tracks were bounced to drop the track count to keep it sane, or to make a loop I could reuse. Some of the samples of Ella were originally recorded for another song, but were used here.

4/4, 111 BPM, Key of C

Track 1: Ella-Back Bongo
The core of this track is me holding Ella and patting her on the back right next to the mic. (She was asleep at the time, and not at all bothered by this.) After patting her for a few seconds, I grabbed the best single pat, then set it on the beat. I exported just this, and made a loop which I reimported and used as this track. I added some reverb to this track.

Track 2: Ella-Butt Bongo
I recorded this similarly to track 1, but patted her diapered bottom, instead. (It still didn't bother her. I grabbed the best single pat, applied it on the beat, and made a loop of it. I took the loop, applied some bit crushing, a bit of equalization, and some reverb, and also duplicated the track and shifted one of them slightly in time. I re-exported just these two tracks to make a new loop, which became Track 2. A little more reverb was applied at this point.

Track 3: Chris-Handbone.
This is me slapping my knee. Some equalization and reverb were applied.

Track 4: Chris-Kiss
This is me making kissing noises into the mic. No processing.

Track 5: Ella-Uh-huh
This is a sample of Ella making noise. No processing. It was recorded in conjunction with "Mommy, You're the Best".

Track 6: Ella-Burp
This is a sample of Ella burping. No processing. It was recorded in conjunction with "Mommy, You're the Best".

Track 7: Julie-Swish
This is a sample of me slowly rubbing my wife Julie's clothed back, with the mic close by. Some reverb was applied.

Track 8: Ella-Short Sneeze
This is a sample of Ella sneezing. No processing. It was recorded in conjunction with "Mommy, You're the Best".

Track 9: Ella-Short Sneeze
This is a sample of Ella sneezing. No processing. It was recorded in conjunction with "Mommy, You're the Best".

Track 10: Ella-Nyuh-uh
This is a sample of Ella making noise. No processing. It was recorded in conjunction with "Mommy, You're the Best".

Track 11: Ella-Tremolo Coo
This is a sample of Ella cooing. I applied a fair amount of manual tremolo with auto-panning, and a good amount of reverb. It was recorded in conjunction with "Mommy, You're the Best".

Track 12: Ella-Spit
This is a sample of Ella spitting. No processing. It was recorded in conjunction with "Mommy, You're the Best".

Track 13: Ella-Ah, Ooh
This is a sample of Ella cooing. No processing. It was recorded in conjunction with "Mommy, You're the Best". This track is panned 50% left.

Track 14: Ella-Ah,choo,un,gee
This is a sample of Ella making noise. No processing. It was recorded in conjunction with "Mommy, You're the Best".

Track 15: Ella-Sigh
This is a sample of Ella sighing. No processing. It was recorded in conjunction with "Mommy, You're the Best". This track is panned almost 75% left.

Track 16: Ella-Coo
This is a sample of Ella cooing. No processing. It was recorded in conjunction with "Mommy, You're the Best". This track is panned 50% right.

Track 17: Chris-Drone-pan
This is another composite track. First, I droned into the mic, kept one beat's worth of good sample, then looped the one beat out to my desired length. I applied a little compression, some equalization, a Full Range flange effect, and some reverb, then duplicated the track. I set one track 100% left, the other 100% right, and used volume automation on both tracks to make the drone crescendo on the left, cross from left to right, then fade out on the right. I exported this to an AIFF and made an Apple Loop out of it, then used the loop on this track.

Track 18: Chris-Drone-dolphin
I used the same Apple Loop created as described in track 17, but in this track I applied some compression, equalization, Dolphin Flange flange effect, Medium Pan tremolo, echo, and reverb.

Track 19: Julie-main line
This is Julie singing along to a tune I recorded on a Classical Piano track that I did not use in the final song. She did several cuts, and I comp'd them all to this track. I applied compression, equalization, and the Fascination flange effect. this track is panned 25% left.

Track 20: Julie-backing line
This is Julie singing an improvisation of her own design. Again, this is a comp track from several takes. I applied compression, equalization, the Light Chorus chorus effect, and Deep Phase phaser.

Track 21: Chris-backing line
This is me singing an improvisation. I applied compression, equalization, echo, and reverb, then exported to an Apple Loop and reimported to this track.

Track 22: Chris-bass line
This is me singing the bass line of a tune I first recorded on a Classical Piano track that I did not use in the final song. I applied compression, equalization, echo, and reverb. This track is panned 25% right.

Tracks 23-37:
These are all disabled in the final song, so the are not included in my track count. They are many of the raw samples and building blocks used to make the other tracks, and described above.

Master Track:
The master track is set to the Dance: Club Chaos preset. I also did not include the Master Track in the track count.
