Song Information:
Another for the project I'm working on with Simon Fish.
Now, don't panic, I haven't suddenly forsaken my left wing principles for some McCain/Palin incredibility!
Imagine this song as a story on a tabloid current affairs TV show. The presenter beats it up like the egg whites in pavlova, they throw to one of the nasty, evil people, they cut to the reporter who expands on the bigotry, then there's footage of a police raid, and finally the "victim", the wealthy factory owner - he didn't know his workers were illegal, nor did his labour hire company. Then we go to an ad for deodorant, HSBC, Ford Motor Co...
Get the deal? This is what TV does, it dehumanises. Radio is a companion. TV is a divider.
Song Lyrics:
Presenter (Spoken)
They look like normal suburban factories,
but deep inside is a dirty little secret,
Illegal immigrants, queue jumpers,
Stealing jobs from young Australians.
Warning, some viewers may find this story disturbing...
Mary
We come from lands far away
to work jobs that you say don’t pay
We try to learn all your customs
but language is a barrier
Stich this seam glue this shoe
It’s work that you won’t do
Five bucks a day peanuts to you
but it will put my kid through school
Reporter 1
They come from lands downtrodden
to steal jobs from our children
They hide inside their ghettos
Breeding extremist cells
They stitch these shoes it just won’t do
Australians are left unemployed
They jump the queue to get through
They don’t have the same rights we do
Harry
They work like Australians won’t
They get a hard days work done
Sure they cheaper than you or me
But that’s just the free market economy
They stitch and glue for me and you
And no-one cares where they come from
And while we make a bag of cash
it wouldn’t get done without them here
Presenter
We find them all so disturbing
Stitch and glue but would you?
Now a word from our sponsor
We’ll be right back after the break...
