Song Information:
Way back -- well, seems like a very long time ago -- on January 16, 2004, I bought iLife on my way home from work. Opening up GarageBand on my old G4 tower was like being 12 years old again and getting a shiny new candy-apple red Schwinn Sting-Ray for my birthday (and January 16th happens to be my birthday). My first GB composition, Salt Shaker, was inspired by all the Latin percussion -- particularly, of course, the shakers -- and horns included in the box with GB and in the original companion Jam Pack. Salt Shaker uses the now iconic, or perhaps cliched, Apple loops Orchestra Strings 08 and RnB Horn Section 08. Just about everyone who experimented early on with GB loop-based tunes must have used these in some combination. I hope my use of these now "classic" loops is at least a little different from all the others. Originally, this tune bore the default "My Song" title, but when I joined MacIdol, I saw that most members were assigning album titles to their tunes, too. I named my first GarageBand album "Rusty Parts", which is what my own garage seems perpetually to be filled with, and that, in turn, inspired the tune title because salt water causes rust. In addition to being my first GB tune, Salt Shaker also started me down the wall-of-sound path (and anyone who's listened to a cross-section of my tunes here knows I'm no minimalist); it originally contained 15 tracks and was even thicker than this 2008 remix, which trims off 2 tracks, re-EQs several tracks, and replaces some of the original software instruments I used on MIDI tracks, particularly bass and electric piano, with less muffled instruments. Mastered with Ozone 3.
