Song Information:
The third track on The Girls and Boy EP, and the comments for the previous song, regarding my inability to differentiate between lust and love, still apply. Having said that, the young lady to whom this song refers was a friend of mine for some years, and yes, she did know that I fancied her something chronic and wasn't exactly terribly nice about saying "no". But then we were teens at the time. Just chalk it up to experience.
This is one of those songs where using Garageband to re-record has immense benefits over my old four-track tape set-up; the "I used to think..." backing vocal lines (which weren't part of the song as written, but were added when I recorded it), on the original, I could only record them onto one track of tape and then pan them left to right. The instrumentation was then bounced onto a couple of tracks (although I think that insufferably pretentious "Aaaah" choir noise was on the same track as the backing vox). It's nice to be able to give each instrument its own bit of space in the mix now.
Song Lyrics:
Chorus:
I used to think you were my dream come true
I used to think I could be right for you
I used to think that you could love me too
I used to think you were my dream come true.
You were my dream come true
That's why when I first met you I fell straight in love with you.
I'd never found a love that good before
So when I found you I kept coming back for more.
The more time we spent together, my love for you grew stronger,
To be with you forever I couldn't wait any longer
(Chorus)
You wasted all my time,
You strung me along, I should've known that you would never be mine.
You took the best years of my life
Then turned and said you didn't want me, that behaviour isn't nice.
You told me you'd another man whom you preferred,
Then crushed me to dust with all your well-chosen words.
(Chorus)
You walked off with someone else
You left me standing on a vacant shelf.
Just tell me what's this other person got
That I apparently have not?
It seems I'm not quite good enough but you won't tell me why
Think I'll just leave you to it, don't want to hear another lie.
(Chorus)
