Song Information:

I wrote this song in 1991, and first recorded it the following year - the line "a couple of years ago" was originally "about a year ago," as it related to events that had taken place in 1990. But I've kept the "a couple of years ago" line since then.

I've recorded it at least four times now, and never quite managed to get it sounding quite as I wanted until now - when you're dealing with a two-part vocal harmony, drums, bass guitar, acoustic guitar, string pad section, and a piano section split into two parts (partly to make it easier to play, and partly so I could pan the left hand and right hand parts slightly left and right), the limitations of a 4-track recorder soon become painfully apparent! Re-recording it using Garageband meant that I was able to take the time to get each part just right. (It also meant I could make the piano part entirely programmed anyway...)

I sometimes included the bracketed portion of the title, and sometimes decided it was too damn' pretentious. Right now, I've decided it stays as part of the title.

When I was compiling my first EP ("The Girls & Boy EP", which I recorded under the name "Piano" - something else I think was probably a bit too pretentious!), I decided to make this the opening track. It's always been a song I've been rather fond of.

Song Lyrics:

I remember a night, a couple of years ago
When you said that we were still good friends.
Looking back, I realise
That you meant we'd reached the end.

I'm still no nearer to knowing why you had your change of heart
You're still no nearer to showing how I'm expected to play my part.

So take a look at me now
Although you say you'd hate to.
Take a look at me now
I believe that you can't wait to.
Take a look at me now.

I remember a day when you expressed
Your feelings in a letter.
I guess you thought, if you made me feel worse
You'd make yourself feel better.

It never seemed before then
That you had an axe to grind.
I'll say this just once more then,
A suggestion to tax your mind.

So take a look at me now
Although you say you'd hate to.
Take a look at me now
I believe that you can't wait to.
Take a look at me now.
