Song Information:
This song is about a time in my life when I lived near this little town called Ehrenberg. The town joke was that if you lived in Ehrenberg it was because you had warrants in California, which was just across the river.
There was a man in Ehrenberg named Fred that I used to hang out with from time to time. There were a lot of things about this guy that were really bizarre. Anyway, one day he threatened to kill me. Swear to God. He made me sit on the floor of his trailer most the day while he told me what he would do to me. It was pretty crazy.
I got out of there after several hours by telling him that I had given this family my word that I would be at their house for dinner. He was wierd about "giving your word." When I told him that he basically said "Oh. You better go then." It was nuts.
There was another lady who lived there that I knew. Her job was to live out by this cockfighting arena (NO LIE-COCKFIGHTING ARENA. This place was a fucking David Lynch movie.) Anyway, her trailer was burned to the ground. They suspected animal rights activists had done it.
I went out there one day after the fire and helped her clean the mess. She lost everything. It was so strange to sift through the soot and rubble. There were scattered bits of pornography and wedding photos. It rained that day.
Song Lyrics:
Tell the man with the gun that you were sent by God
And if he shoots you anyway
At least you know who will you see
I could've never really guessed it would be like this
But they never told me what I needed to know
That shithole town is so many miles away
Off in Arizona
Where the river washes the soot away
Tell the man with the gun that you were sent by God
And if he shoots you anyway
You can both catch up on judgement day
It's the saddest story ever told
So bright
So strong
So beautiful and cold
