Well I've always loved this song ever since as a kid I would listen to my mom's Mahalia Jackson album "The World's Greatest Gospel Singer" (that was no overstatement) and I recently became obsessed with it when my son started Hebrew School and they were studying about Noah and the Great Flood. It's an odd tale and created a lot of questions in my 8-year old's mind. Also through the Temple, we went to a showing of "An Inconvenient Truth" since there has been an interfaith promotion of the issues raised in the movie, and I was quite impressed by Mr. Gore's explanation of the crisis we are in now. It's a shame that the issue has been politicized because that leads some to disregard the truth. It's not inconceivable that the planet will undergo something similar to what happened with Noah and The Great Flood, and then where we will be? I feel that as stewards of this planet, it is a question of spiritual values that we take care of it, and do whatever we can to reduce greenhouse gases and live more in harmony with our environment. But I am more of a musician than a scientist, so here comes a song!
So anyway, I struggled with the correct approach to my musical interpretation to this traditional spiritual, as I am no Mahalia, and I studied a number of great versions of this song, my favorite being a live version by The Campbell Brothers. I went for a bluesier version, with banjo, acoustic guitar, piano, distorted harmonica leading the way. Maybe it's not correct, but it was a fun thing to do!
