Song Information:

I wrote this song a ten years ago, and I recorded it for my album "Toots' Rambles" then as a folkie sing-along with a sort of hook in the guitar and it was a big hit in the local coffeehouses. I decided to update it recently after I played a song with my friends Ry and Sean in Session Americana, as a boogie blues. There's a couple of genres that can handle a two chord song, and boogie blues is one, James Brown funk being the other. My brother Albert did the funky version with his band The Brain Surgeons, so that leaves me this genre to explore. I tried to keep it pretty simple, but it does build up a little towards the end. I do play a bit of hand drums and tamborine on this, along with the acoustic guitar, bass guitar, harmonica and organ and various other software instruments.

The song actually has a lot of little things about it that are somewhat close to my life so I guess you might call it a true story, but I don't think Buddha actually said "Whatever Works..." though that may be one way to get to the Middle Way. Enjoy!

Song Lyrics:

Whatever Works

Theres a kid jumpin up and down, got a stick in his hand
Hes goin to poke an eye out but he just doesnt understand
Make the best of it but what it is he dont know
Life is what you make it, thats what they tell him, but what floats that boat
As he figures it out
He scratches his head
Bein just a kid his thoughts wander
And this is where they led
Whatever works for you works for me

Sittin at a table with the artists off to the side
They all want to sell out but no one wants to buy
In the clamor for justice for their voice to be heard
All this noise comes down to just one word
Is it yay or nay?
The dogs must be fed
Lets knock off for dinner
Said Smokey and Fred
Whatever works for you works for me

Sittin at a traffic light lookin like a Christmas tree
Wondering which way to turn as it blinks red to green
This life Im leading is one endless cloverleaf
And Ill be pushin up daisies before I get any relief
I can flip a coin
To go right or left
When it comes to me in a flash of blue
What really lies ahead
Whatever works for you works for me

Definitely may be
Where theres a will theres a way
When enveloped by worry
In this thought theres some cachet

Buddha was sittin by the shade of a baobab tree
Relaxin and ruminatin as hes sippin on a Long Island Iced Tea
lookin at the people there all holdin out their hands
Strainin their ears for something they can understand
He cleared his throat
And he raised his head
In a voice that poured out like cool water
This is what he said
Whatever works for you works for me
