Middle movement of "Three Lorca Sketches for Orchestra."
This was inspired by a Federico García Lorca poem called "Córdoba," about a traveler who is undertaking a lengthy, solitary, night-time journey to the title city by horseback, but knows he will never reach it (the subtitle of this work is "La Muerte Me Está Mirando," ('death is watching me') one of the lines from the poem).
I tried to capture this sense of fatalism in the music through repetition of phrases, a slow, languid tempo, and stark chord voicings. There is an ironic sense of beauty in the poem's fatalism, which I also tried to work into the music.
Dedicated to the memory of my mother, whose own journey ended far too quickly almost 30 years ago.
