Song Information:

This is a practice piece.
The instruments are chiefly tweaked loops.
I made no attempt to get rid of paper rattles or to sing in some fashion other than sucky.
My true intent for the final piece is to have nice honky-tonk Dr.-John-like piano and appropriate percussion, but this might never happen; simply a matter of currently-lacking talent in such particular things.

In short, am putting this here so that those who have seen my lyric set for the song can get an idea of its metric scansion.

"American Gumbo"

Take a heavy pot and heat it up, to begin this recipe:
Processed flour from those amber waves, and some oil from the shining sea.
If the color starts to polarize and turn from white to streaks of red and blue,
You don't want none of them in-between shades, 'cause you got yourself a perfect roux.

That's how you start a gumbo,
Start makin' that gumbo;
It keeps you healthy, makes you sick,
American Gumbo.

Buy some veggies from a store so big, they had to kill about two thousand trees.
Buy some meat from a meat factory; that organic stuff just carries disease.
Get some spices but not too much; you're appealing to the mainstream of taste.
What you want is a flavor in between plain nothin' and wallpaper paste.

That's the best kind of gumbo,
A real crowd-feedin' gumbo.
It keeps you healthy, makes you sick,
American Gumbo.

Throw in lots of good assorted stuff, cook it down until it all looks the same.
In respect for the ozone layer, use an open toxic jet fuel flame.
Stir up a couple of Hurricanes while cookin', 'cause the house is getting way too hot.
Boil the snows of January with the fumes from your melting pot.

That's how you make the gumbo;
Gonna be a good gumbo.
It keeps you healthy, makes you sick,
American Gumbo.

And if you don't like what's in it,
You can try to change the recipe.
You can try, but you prob'ly won't win it;
That's what's great about democracy.
'Cause while the left and right hand stir up their bitchin',
Tryin' to make each other look like fools,
We'll allow some nonconformists in the kitchen,
Just so long as the majority rules.

It's the way that it's been for years, and it tastes the same as it did then.
And when it stops selling real well, we'll reorganize the kitchen again.
And every few dozen years you get a bowl that is tasty and authentic and true;
Just keep your mouth shut about it, otherwise everybody else might want some too.

But that isn't gumbo,
It's not really gumbo.
To keep you healthy, make you sick,
