Rand Reynolds is a songwriter hell-bent on dispelling the notion that hillbilly music is simply a bunch of bib-overalled country yahoos sprawled outside a cabin passing a jug around and banging on out-of-tune banjos and fiddles. Well, yeah, there IS that. But Reynolds has managed to combine the story-telling emotional impact and that powerful musical presence of our country roots heritage with a new edge slant. This Hillbilly Noir genre, as Reynolds calls it, is an acoustic unsettling because of its underlying menace and desolate overtones. It is minimalist by nature; ambitious in its scope. Reynolds' songs have been described by some listeners as early Johnny Cash vocals/instrumentation spear-headed by Quentin Tarantino lyrics. Reynolds relies on traditional themes -- love, lust, jealousy, obsession, hate -- and twists them into contemporary tunes that are, in reality, ancient voices threading all of humankind. Reynolds’ dark overtones are resonant, powerful and riveting. |
