The Clash; Their music is as alive as ever...
Thanks to Rich and the Macidol community for two years musical entertainment.
As a personal experiment in making music and in particular re-discovering the instruments that I played so much at one time it has been a lot of fun. The majority of the material I produced, however, pales in comparison to what is really out there. Thanks to all those that listened and commented on my diminuitive efforts at making music..
The *real* music scene itself has flourished with brilliant new British groups creating music that has resurrected 'cool britannia' The output of the great bands and musicians from the 60s through to the 80s has become a real influence in the music being generated by a whole new generation of kids. Guitar sales have rocketed. Once again music has become a shared activity amongst friends rather than an individual passive pastime. As a friend in California said recently ' every other person is in a band'.
This is a great time for music and I am listening to ever more superb new music from cool bands. It is not dissimilar to the independant label revolution that occured in the UK during the latter 70's and 80's. Youth has a new voice and its now being accompanied by very loud live guitars in clubs and pubs everywhere..
I will continue to add new music from time to time to my myspace site. Older material is available on request.
All the best.

This week (and in response to a recent request) much of the material in Emily's Cafe can be re-experienced in a Flashlight retrospective 'Open Studio' week.
All material can be downloaded but be warned that it is likely to require later disposal at an approved nuclear installation for health and safety reasons.
I also include many (but not all!) of the snippets and unfinished songs that may not have lasted too long in the jamroom for obvious reasons.
Have fun.

The new year thickens. I revised my Jamroom to show recent stuff. Some is unfinished and reflects practice sessions. no30 remains an energetic fave ( the quickly made ones are often the best!) so I will keep that on too.
Some older songs are available on the bottled myspace site.

over and out.
I have fallen out of the habit of updating my macidol site but have added some bloggish type stuff at my 'my space' site.
As far as musical creativity goes I have too many half started songs. I have managed to submit a few to macidol tho; of note recently has been 'The Killing Fields' and a short piece called 'No30' both of which I like a lot.
I would like to make more in the style of No30.
Seems like I have given up on timelines. Recording now is simply a matter of pressing record and playing an instrument and then layering on top.. all in real time. That includes drums/percussion. I can recommend Battery for creating drum tracks.
I have lost confidence in my voice and so despite attempting vocals always end up leaving them off. After all.... I am just the bass player and really someone else should do vocals
An fun diversion recently was to create a weird retro sounding apollo 11 song with an orchestral arrangement; 'The Impossible Dream' A little bit of a joke I even made a spoof album cover for it!
This weekend I made a short rock number called
iPod Rider
It was a response to Tim Sherwood (another macidol artist) who said he accidentally topped 115 MPH on his Harley Davidson whilst immersed in the music of Led Zeppelin on his iPod. iPod Rider is a little odd because despite its obvious musical references it really was done quite quickly and with little in the way of second takes. Its just another of those songs that fall out of their own accord. Stranger too as the drums are mostly a single pass... played on a KEYBOARD. Shit! Where did all that come from??
It is a good example of playing without thinking. I know its not that great.. ask a drummer.. but it is still kinda weird how it played itself. The thought was in making the mix later and adding a few pans. Very little needed to be done to the raw instrument sounds. I like it. I just wish i had planned it to be longer than its 2.20.
It topped the macidol charts for a few days at No1
Thanks to everyone that gave it a spin and I hope that the iPod rider - Tim enjoys the tune whilst riding on his mean machine.
Currently the beer here is flowing with the public release of the definitive collection; 'SONGS FROM THE RIVER.
Thirteen (unlucky for those that don't get the CD!) cracking tracks which veer from rock to psychedelia and back whilst stopping off briefly for a swift half at the Fort St George Pub on the river Cam.
Copies of this 'artist' produced CD are available via my store here and includes a lyric sheet insert.
In addition it has now become available at CDBaby
The track listing is as follows;
1. Another Day 04:08
2. So Beautiful 03:40
3. The Powder 03:34
4. Fire 05:48
5. A Trip to the Stars 04:53
6. Ocean of Light 05:25
7 Something Going Down 02:52
8. Dr Mystik's Magik Flying Tea-Towel 04:02
9. Tonite (Make a Little Love) 03:02
10. Love Shuttle (Road Block) 03:42
11. Devotion 03:18
12. My Plastic Head is Filled with Lead 03:26
13. Emeralds and Diamonds 11:52
Total running time is just over an hour.
My heartfelt thanks to all those that have contributed following my appeal for support funds.
As a direct consequence I have been very busy putting together a definitive album consisting of the BEST of my music from the last year or so. Taking the original .aif files I have remastered some.. edited a few and made some appropriate adjustments to levels on others. Maybe I have spent the best part of four days on the tracks to get them up to standard.
The listing includes my most recent effort; 'my plastic head is filled with lead' which although created fairly spontaneously is quite captivating. Missing from the listing is the macidol competition entry 'ocean of light' which despite its rocking dual guitar solo was never really finished (more guitar and vocal harmonies) and it sits uncomfortably next to the other songs chosen. I spent a LOT of time trying to fix it by remastering but alas it still doesn't appear to cut it like the ones already chosen[grrr!] However it will most likely find its way on.... somehow.
Remastered too is the BK competition entry 'Radio Banana' which now sounds great but lacks the vocals that would make it a firm candidate and an old tune 'We have the Technology' appears a little short for a song track. Finally the collaboaration with Maggie Osterberg on her song sounds good too.. decisions huh? I should make two!
I may have changed my mind completely by the time I issue the CD and after having listened to it a few times... and am of course open to suggestions for changes or additions.
I am really pleased to get together something so far that sounds not just good but quite a vast improvement on the initial encoded mp3s put on this site.
Finally I have looked at the possibility of including my latest song for the CD.. if I can complete it in good time.... maybe
friday update..
I think the CD is fine with Ocean of Light .. and that brings the total running time to just over an hour which is a reasonable 'set'
I like playing with graphics and wanted to make a CD cover myself. I have now spent WAY too much time doing this now but it is fun and sadly I now have more choices of covers than songs on the album! Initially I had a problem as my graphics editor didn't want to print with any good quality and I had to read up on colour management (yawn) Then I discovered vector graphics allowing me create some cool stuff that will print well.
I am desperate to get the CD finished and out to friends before next week but its quite a big step for me and I am trying to do the best job I can for all those that have already pre-paid for the album.
Update. Sunday
The first batch of covers have been made and much better than I imagined with photoquality graphics and artwork. A little heavy on the inks I need to get some more cartridges (Ouch!! too expensive!) The actual CD design is finished too.
A trip to PC world for cartridges and printable CD labels tomorrow...
I am currently without any income and so reluctantly have to start foraging in the forest... and sell a few things.

Hello and welcome to my macidol music site. Please take a little time to browse thro my back catalogue of musical creations. They vary from straight rock thro to psychedelia and the odd bit of sound-scaping. All were created in the last year and contain very few loops; what you hear is really what was, often spontaneously created, played and recorded. The only exception are the drums which on many tracks (but not all) are often samples.
If you like Pink Floyd/Bowie/Doors/The Who you might find 'Emeralds and Diamonds', 'Trip to the Stars', 'Tonight (make a little love)', 'Fire' , 'So Beautiful' and 'Something Going Down' fun with their obvious retrospective influenced styling.
My submission at the end of 2004 for the macidol competition 2;'Ocean of Light' was a straight attempt at writing and performing a bare bones rock n roll song.. it fared badly in the results but it was good practice to write to a deadline.
My own contemporary tastes tend towards English music wether Barret inspired Brit Pop, Indie or Rock. But I am very eclectic and enjoy anything that is GOOD!
2004 has really been an exploratory time whilst I set up a home studio and return back to playing following a period of self imposed exile from the music scene. My set up consists of; 1 GHz DP MDD G4 1.25 GB RAM, Tascam US-428, Oxygen8, Fender Jazz bass (US 1973), Fender Telecaster (MIJ 198,Yamaha 6 string acoustic and a 100W Marshall JMP Mk II bass head and cabinet (1980)I use general purpose Optimus plate mics for voice, percussion and instruments.
My aim this year is to produce a collection of original songs for a new CD.
Thanks for visiting and contact me if you have any questions or comments.

A new song; 'Something Going Down' for my jamroom and getting me back into the swing of playing after a break. The song has taken the best part of three days to produce from scratch. Unintentional as usual this one has turned out to be a bit of a Who/Led Zep/Cream rocker. The vocals and lyrics remain a problem (THE big Problem) but I have been chuffed to have been told this song has touches of Psychedelic Furs and Led Zeppelin about it!
I particularly like the overdriven bass; a sound I found creating a fun song called 'Living in the Eighties' the week before. I will be using that sound a lot more. Some of the groove reflects a little on my more fave brit pop/rock bands; Charlatans/Supergrass so I am well pleased. I even got a 'its like Franz Ferdinand' comment. Excellent! ) I need a voice for it.
Give it a whirl.

Woooooooooo hooooooooooooo!!
Thanks to everyone that took the time to listen to my songs.
Thats a LOT of plays and I REALLY appreciate the encouragement.
'Emeralds and diamonds' remains a site favourite with 470 plays and just over 100 downloads and thats apart from the 250 downloads for the 4 parts that were created before the final piece was augmented and assembled!! Since that particular song at 12 minutes is a 16 mb file it gives me a real buzz to know that such so many people have taken the time to download it. It makes all the time and effort that I spent on all the intricacies of that particular piece reallyworthwhile.
My first GarageBand composition 'we have the technology' has had over 900 listens and 150 downloads. However the star song of the site remains 'so beautiful' with almost 300 plays and 80 downloads since posted. I hope to create a few more like those!
Cheers
Paul.

New song... I get to slap my bass, chop at my tele and generally engage in some volatile guitar and vocal anarchy. Much of the background sounds are guitarwork but the backing vocals are enhanced with a synth. Vocals and lyrics are a bit dodgy as usual and a little depressing but what the hell!
Fire
Thanks to Rob Andrews for the excellent 'ƒire' graphic.

But that has not stopped Maggie Osterberg and myself collaborating on a song.
We have ended up with the 'Macidol Sister Ray' albeit a little short;
'Everyone I Know'
For my part I injected a little bass, guitar n vocals(poor) into Maggies 'Stooge' like preliminary version of 'Everyone I Know' the resulting mahem is raw rock n roll that wouldn't be out of place in '68 and burns quite brightly for its short time. Check it out and more hi-octane guitar work on Maggie_Osterberg'smacidol music site.
I created a second (Jim) re-mix of the song which provides a little more 'in your face' sound to answer criticism that the early version posted lacked vocal clarity. I hope you enjoy it.
Check out the ultra-cool glasses on Maggies graphic of John Cale!!!
ps. My own family are originally from Wales too.

This week I have virtually re-mastered all the songs on the site using T-RackS. Hopefully this should have brought the sound levels on most songs up to the same... er.. level. The exceptions are the original flying cow series ( although E&D is) DITS/mechanical/suburbia/k-mation/ free-dom rock. Most of these didn't require any volume boost. Following a review of all the content it is becoming apparent that the site needs to go up a notch or two and drop the less valid material. I have posted some alternative mixes of songs that were found during the remastering process. Ill have a good clear out in a few weeks and drop a lot. yes I will.

Yesterday I uploaded a spanking new SONG recorded over three days this week and fulfilling a small promise to myself.
Once again its a performance based piece that makes very little use of samples except for the drums. It does however utilize some fancy synth playing and I play the penny whistle as a solo!!! Mad huh?
Have a listen to 'trip to the stars'. It has a bit of a David Bowie feel to it ('Space Oddity' is such a cool cool song dontcha think?) although it ends sounding like Joy Division. There is some strange magic that unfolded in this song of its own accord. Don't ask me how as it surprised me too.
Its not bad at all.....
...in fact it is totally cosmic.

Seasons of colds and unhealthy coughs.
I'm looking forward to a little time off from work with GarageBand in October but meanwhile I am working like a dog (woof)...however I had a few hours to spare late on a Monday
I hacked a bass line out and then tried to emulate a heavy valve driven stack for fun. A couple of riffs immediately popped out (without a thought) and with the help of 'drums on demand' loops I had a heavy song happening. It was desperate for vocals so I plugged in the mic and belted out some instant words. If you listen to mechanical you can almost hear my brain crunching through its gears as it struggles to climb a steep hill of spontaneous creativity. No overdubs. No nothing. ...looped the chorus tho I think it sounds like Iggy Pop and Rich (the macidol man) pointed out that some of the guitar sounds like the song Soulman. I had to find the song but when I did listen to a sample of the beginning I can see exactly what he means.
Anyhow. Its yet another fun, instant and ultimately throwaway two minute song.

A few swift numbers uploaded to Macidol this last week;
'Death in the Suburbs' is a simple punk piece (D E S T R O Y !!) that I put together after I had given my telecaster a complete overhaul and new strings.
'The Crush' is a driving song that consists essentially of elaborations on two guitar riffs. I wail a bit on it revealing a little senile dementia.. (oh dearie me!)
Both songs do not use any loops and the 'played' drums don't sound half bad although simple. The drum beat rhythm is particularly effective on 'the crush' and required at least 2 brain cells to play.
Neither are THAT bad for instant songs..... but I should aim to make completed songs rather than put up excerpts from spontaneous jams that dont take much longer to create than actually play..maybe Im still searching for a style or am I just plain lazy? who knows? who cares? I need more time.
All good creative fun anyhow.

Emeralds and diamonds represents the musical journey undertaken by the 'low flying cow' series already posted in the last few months. All parts have been joined together and re-mastered together with additional material throughout. In particular sound FX now bridge the parts and the song finishes with some cool sounding synth work. There are only two very simple drum loops used for 2 parts which have been edited a little. Otherwise most of the drums and percussion are 'played' and NO other loops used. All instruments and voices are mine except for my son Jay's laughter in the first part. I am grateful to him too for the use of his Early Learning Centre tambourine. The song is a little theatrical in style. It was good to practise my playing and hopefully wasn't too mediocre.
Once again more time was spent on trying to get a half decent sound in the mix than anything else. I'm sure the project would have sounded a lot better if someone else had done all that stuff.
moooo.

So Beautiful
has been REALLY well received in Japan with 586 hits in just one month and a mountain of good reviews.
I especially love this one from eco_dek describing the song:
hakanai
setsunai
(Beauty like the flame of a candle.)
Special thanks to kimux for translating the lyrics into Japanese. All you guys rock.
A great encouragement from all.
THANK YOU

I threw some new strings on my bass. Not something I have to do very often it alters the sound quite a bit. So I jammed a little to try them out and a few riffs sprung out so I added some drums and guitar. Despite its basic nature I posted it on Macidol as Suburbia
It hasnt deserved much interest and I added some crazy lyrics for the hell of it.
I tried to attract some vocal collaboration for the this piece under its working title; 'insomnia'.
Posted: 06 Aug 2004 03:10 PM
Once again I abandon my current effort in favour of a quick fun comedy song. I found a quick Kevin Ayers type groove.... Well it didn't start out like that but once I added some lyrics it ended up that way. It has limited appeal since it focuses on the lyrics and most people (like myself) probably have limited attention spans and will miss the the complete story.
I have no idea why I sang it with a funny fictional accent.
no strangers
Anyhow it makes me laugh every time I hear it and it IS funny.

Following a brief from a good friend and slacker animator I made a little short piece for him to use.
K-mation uses quite a few sound samples. However it opens with my screaming guitar and then follows with a bass, synth and guitar groove disguised with a few nice SF styled samples. The overall effect represents a short journey which then opens out to a alien landscape.
The piece could develop further towards an ambient techno groove using loops, synths and samples but that would go beyond the essential remit and would become simply a button pushing experience creativity wise.

An hour or so to spare on Friday evening. So for a blast I set the FX controls to 'space' and found myself in Allens 'space punk' magik pixie country. I went to see Planet Gong; Here & Now at the London School of Economics on the 22nd of March 1978.. It was quite an introduction to a more exotic form of music.
'Dr Mystik's MagiK Flying Tea Towel (Live)' replicates a live 'gong type song' although it really needs a hall thick with smoke to be a little closer to the 'experience actuel' !

I had spent some time editing a Kinks inspired song when GarageBand crashed [arggggggggh] and took a lot of that work with it. A little frustrated I simply left that song and clicked on 'New'.
The resulting song; 'so beautiful' took a couple of days to make and is based around performance....primarily guitar work but also keyboards. The only pre-recorded loop is an apple drum sample but that is augmented by 'played' drums and tambourine. It began as a Velvet Underground type groove and then quickly became more of a Who/Cure sounding song with Barrett type vocals. Lots of good influences and the final sound isn't that bad and I particularly enjoyed playing the 'windmill' crash chords.
I needed this song to remind myself of what I can really do with music.
Seems cool to me !

A couple of new 'songs' quickly (but never that quick) thrown together. 'Torture' was a response to some recent events and is a bit of a thrash. Its probably not nice.
'Devotion' is mostly messing about on a keyboard and incorporates samples and lots of effects although theres still quite a bit of my guitars on there. I like this piece a lot although a few small timing issues remain on the mix.
The photo above is of the community of monks at Wat Luang Phor Sodh Dhammakayaram, Thailand from which the chant in the song derives. You can visit their website at http://www.dhammakaya.org and listen to the complete recital.
I really need some time to write some real songs and soon.
Really.

Today the songs on this site hit one THOUSAND plays.
Thanks for taking an interest in these rock-n-roll rambling 'songs' of mine. I have quite a few more tormented creations to do and a fair number in various states of construction. I personally think some of the quick 'off the wall' stuff are more original. Low flying cow is my current favourite tune. GarageBand is a LOT of fun and good for a laff.
Its cool to have an (even if passing) audience to motivate me make stuff. Thanks a bunch.

Uploaded 'tonight (make a little love)' today and it should have been called PIG! IT took me bloody ages to mix and its still a mess. In fact it sounded good without any mixing or effects but my singing sux big time. Anyhow I'm proud of the song because theres a fair bit of half decent guitar and keyboard work gone into it. Cannot say I do either THAT well. But for me it was okay and fun to boot. Now where do I put the other 50 mixes that I didn't like ? Oh. and any resemblance to the Doors is purely co-incidental.
_____________________________________________________
Mon 5th April
I think I FINALLY got the mix together.
The song consisted of 17 tracks. The lead guitar and lead synth. took 2 tracks each. Vocals took 3 tracks although the high voice doesnt figure so well on the latest mix.
This all took more time than I expected and the final mix was mostly about trying to keep the whole mix out of the 'red' zones on the master volumes.
The Pig has finally landed.
Oink.

Today I posted a dub reggae song entitled 'love shuttle(road block)'
I'm not sure of the inspiration but it flowed simply from a few creative efforts using GarageBand late on Monday night. In fact I had some gastric flu bug and had spent the best part of the evening either being sick or laying down. Anyhow I picked through a bassline and added drums then various guitar parts with varying degrees of effects. Then I focussed on additional percussion and keyboard parts. Finally I rearranged the lot and tried writing some lyrics ala Jarvis Cocker style. As usual vocals dont come easily and I abandoned them. The next day I completed the arrangement and mix and added some additional background in the form of the policeman from postman pat (thanks Oliver Postgate) and some crowd noises. The most difficult part seemed to be converting to mp3 in a form that sounded ok. Eventually it seemed ok albeit not great and I uploaded to MacIdol and asked the guys on the board for an opinion. By Wednesday evening it was not just hot but at the top!
Some satisfaction to get it all made and out there AND praised.
Great feeling. Many thanks to all those that listened and commented on the song.
A number one dubstar for the day !

GREETZ to all the Pink Floyd fans that might have found their way here from the fan site. My own contribution and tribute to the genius of the Floyd is reflected in two songs I threw together.
The first: low flying cow introduces Emily the cow (pictured above) Emily kindly takes us for a flight in her pink fluorescent flying wicker cow basket to the mystical East and together we have lots of fun.
Listen to Emily fly!
The second which uses NO loops...I even 'play' the drums: low flying cow pt.2 features Emily floating her flying basket past the window of a flowered up hippy playing a very heavy bottleneck riff on his scruffy old guitar. Emily flew past looking for some nice fresh grass.
As a Cambridge resident I probably share my milk supply with Roger 'Syd' Barrett.
Shine on.

UPDATE; This and the 'Low Flying Cow' pt 1 to 4 were all incorporated together into 'emeralds and diamonds'
In the three days since posting the song we have the technology it has received over 220 listens and has been one of the most 'popular' songs on Macidol !
I am a little blown away by the response. To be frank ( and I'm not frank coz I'm Paul) it DOES have something. A friend suggested it would make a perfect tune for an Apple iPod or GarageBand advert. mmmmmmmm.
Anyhow thanks for listening; I hope you have enjoyed the tune and thanks to Macidol.com for the free hosting.

Once I had the undoubted privilege of actually signing band photos for a few people following a gig I played in Le Mans, France. I was a little taken aback and mildly embarrassed but they looked like nice french girls and I got my pen out.
So here is a Photo.
