My first year out of college, i taught high school english at a small private school in maine. the french teacher, sarah, and i were friends, and she was missing her boyfriend a lot. she wrote part of this song for him on guitar but wanted more complicated chords than the triads she knew so she asked for my help. i wrote the chords to the "tangled up" section using a major-minor seventh and a minor-diminished-major ninth among others. ;-) we never really finished the song, but we did have a verse and a chorus.
the following year i did a semester at berklee college of music, and decided to use this for one of my harmony classes. i tweaked some of the chords to fit all the requirements for the assignment and make it more mine (i got an "a" on it). a couple years later, i added the bridge (the pedal part) from which the song title finally emerged: mind's eye.
kara sings this much better than i, but we don't have a good recording of it so another green street version gets airing on macidol. ben, who is playing bass, sings some harmony on the bridge, and adam, the dummer, sings the descant i wrote, but you can't hear it well enough, and it was the first time we'd tried to do all the harmony, and ah it's not quite there. again, this is an open mic in our rehearsal space -- all live, no overdubbing.
the pic was taken at wxou, "radio bar," on jen's birthday in '05.
