Biography Born in Zimbabwe, Bruce Mathema, now commonly known as Shot the Wiz discovered his love for music at an early age, moving on rapidly to work in collaboration with Alvin Takavarasha, David Majongwe and Tinashe Mafemba at Churchill High School, Harare in the mid 90s. That was when he started creating his first beats on the Atari system. His first production featured Tendai Huchu, now based in Scotland.
Shot the Wiz worked with friends in his hometown of Bulawayo before catching a flight to Canada in the year 2000. Once in Canada, he moved rapidly to create the 3 man kwaito outfit Zulu4u. Based in Montreal he produced the kwaito bangers that have come to be household tracks amongst the Zimbabweans in Canada. Once the music started getting known especially in Montreal, Shot the Wiz welcomed other Zimbabwean artists into the stable, creating HozaFriday Entertainment, which saw its peak in 2004 at the Toronto independence celebrations. At such dizzying heights, some artists went their own way to create individual acts, however Shot the Wiz continued to produce music with the well known zimbabwean reggea artist YardSteppa and also with Barry. Big tracks like Lil Shorty and Go girl were a perfect fit with the already hot tracks on Yardsteppa's debut album - the Dedication. DJ Losa was also an integral part of the HozaFriday stable. Shot the Wiz has qualifications in Mineral Processing and Extractive Metallurgy, so he had been away studying french as well as due to the demands of the regular 9 to 5 at a metal refinery in Montreal. A new projected dubbed Ekoneni - which means at the corner saw the return of Shot the Wiz on the music scene. Loyal supporters and fans welcomed back the artist and producer. The first major project was on a single with a new 16 year old singer from Montreal called Gabriane, her album was released in September 2007 under the AudioPact label. "Comme ailleurs" was the single to hit the airwaves, creating a buzz all over Quebec. Once Shot the Wiz heard that song on radio he was prompted to write the song called "I am on the radio" which appears on his debut album. At the end of 2007 Shot the Wiz moved up north of Quebec, a place called James Bay, known for its treacherous winters and short cool summers. There, he went on to produce and record more tracks that appear on his debut album called Ekoneni Music. Tracks featured include Nherera, a track dedicated to Aids orphans, Cola the massive kwaito collaboration featuring Yardsteppa, Dont stop and Tola kona amongst others. Recently 2 public appearances at the Zimbabwe Independence celebrations in Toronto and Montreal served as a reminder that the fans are out there waiting for more from Ekoneni Music. Presently, Shot the Wiz is working hard on reviving HozaFriday Entertainment in conjunction with YardSteppas riddim kings. The fusion of Ekoneni Music and Riddim Kings promises good things. So for all the fans out there, your support is greatly appreciated. Shot the Wiz can be contacted by email shotthewiz@gmail.com .
