It’s an odd name. Hard to pronounce, hard to understand. People don’t get it. What’s the deal ?
Fishboi:sfo came about as a screen name initially. (( Pronounced “FISH - BOY - S.F.O.” or simply “FISH - BOY --SAN FRANCISCO” )) It had changed with every city that he lived in as the airport codes changed: Fishboi:dfw, Fishboi:sdf, Fishboi:nyc, etc.
“After moving to San Francisco, the inspiration to work on my style of music became consuming. . .
I kept turning on the radio and turning it off. It seems the 80's and 90's truly had died with regards to Pop music. Melodic grooves with well written vocals were a vanishing breed. This album, Schooled Beneath the Surface, was my first experiment to revive that genre. I believe I had great inspiration, but have just scratched he surface”.
“My music Style seemed to take on a life of it’s own. I am working towards my own genre in the style of bands like those of the 70’s: Audio Soundscapes, Audio Landscapes; story telling with music. Few of my pieces are ever less than 8 minutes long -- and as much as I would love to write a 4-minute pop song, my music seems to “ Breathe” on it’s own.”
“The album Schooled Beneath the Surface was actually named after a metaphor I had latched onto: I had invented it. For me, it was a reference to some of the more painful experiences that the soul often learns even when the mind or body haven’t quite caught on. Coming to terms with the death of friends, that there are sinister individuals on the planet, or that just seeing something rarely means you understand it -- Schooled Beneath the Surface represents what one can do with the lessons once they've been paid attention to.”
Born in Rhode Island, Donald has lived all over the United States. Three different grade Schools, Four different High Schools, Three different Colleges. Neither a kick out nor a drop out -- he was merely the product of forced integration and a family's propensity to move.
All through school, and in every state, he was a vocalist. In 1982, he received "Best Tenor" for a High School Student for the State of Kentucky. All State Choir, Soloist, Madrigal Choir; 4 years in a row.
Currently working on his second album : "The Bubble Machine" which appears to be heading into a new and more industrial area, this new album is much, much more refined and personal. “Refine, refine, refine !!” and “FIDELITY!” were the key points to this next production scheduled for release in mid- 2008.
“I have been working very, very hard at honing my skill with the instruments I have, and have left behind much of the "Loop" based material, preferring now to craft my own. I also seem to have developed a focus and clarity in my point of view. I am anxious to finish”.
Fishboi:sfo has also worked extensively with choreographers in the San Francisco Bay Area that lead their own dance company(s). Recently, Fishboi:sfo performed, arranged, and mastered the title "Tic-Toc" ( The shows titled track ) recently performed in San Francisco by Kirsten William's "Strong Current Dance Company".
